In 2009, we hosted the VEX Robotics Competition at Paul L Dunbar High School. We, the students, were very instrumental in making the event happen in that we dedicated our time by staying late and setting up the gym for the tournament the night before the competition. Twenty four teams attended and competed on two fields, one of which we borrowed from Dulaney High School (Rex) and the other was given to us from the CCBC TIME Center by College of Southern Maryland. Many teams couldn’t afford the funds to attend and our team was generous enough to pay for them. At the event, teams were given a chance to test their robots and tweak their designs if needed. By facilitating a dry run, we hoped to help encourage even less successful teams to keep trying.  Many teams received our assistance in many areas including programming. Because of our continuing efforts in robotics and helping others through robotics, we received a proclamation from Governor O’Malley which recognized the Lab Rats and Dunbar High School’s efforts in promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Governor O’Malley has been aware of and continues to be impressed with Dunbar’s efforts to provide support to neighboring communities with their efforts to educate middle and high school students in science and engineering through robotics.
